Villa Negativa: A Memoir in Verse Explores the Darkness and Trauma of Child Abuse
Jennifer Hubbard's memoir in verse, Villa Negativa, is a powerful and unflinching exploration of the darkness and trauma of child abuse. Hubbard writes with raw honesty about her experiences of growing up in a violent and abusive home, and the long and difficult journey she took to heal and find peace.
The book is divided into four parts, each of which focuses on a different stage of Hubbard's life. The first part, "Childhood," recounts the early years of her abuse, including the physical, emotional, and sexual violence she endured at the hands of her father. The second part, "Adolescence," follows Hubbard as she tries to escape her abusive home and build a new life for herself. The third part, "Adulthood," chronicles Hubbard's struggles with addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. The fourth part, "Recovery," tells the story of Hubbard's journey to healing and redemption.

Hubbard's writing is spare and lyrical, and her poems are filled with vivid imagery and a deep sense of pain and longing. She writes about the fear and shame she felt as a child, the anger and resentment she carried as a teenager, and the despair and hopelessness she experienced as an adult. But through it all, Hubbard never gives up on herself. She writes about the strength and resilience she found within herself, and the love and support she received from others that helped her to heal and find peace.
Villa Negativa is a difficult book to read, but it is also an important one. It is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for healing and redemption.
Excerpt from Villa Negativa
My father was a monster,
A demon from hell,
Who haunted my childhood,
And made my life a living hell.
He beat me with his fists,
And burned me with his cigarettes.
He raped me over and over again,
And told me it was my fault.
I was a prisoner in my own home,
Afraid to leave,
Afraid to speak out,
Afraid to live.
But I survived,
I escaped his clutches,
And I am here to tell my story,
To help others who have suffered,
To let them know that they are not alone,
And that there is hope for healing.
